This week we tagged three more Shags with GPS loggers, two adults and one subadult. The first GPS data which we received show that Bepo and Ante wander far from coast during the day, while for now Tonin keeps close to the roosting site on the shellfish farm near Strunjan.
The subadult Bepo is an absulute winner among “our” tagged Shags, as it forages more then 10 km from its roosting site near the Port od Koper and more than 7 km from the closest point on the coast. Only Tartini can compare with Bepo, as it takes foraging trips as far as 7,5 km from its roosting site at the Strunjan shellfish farm and almost 7 km from the nearest point on the coast. We regularly observed the Mediterranean Shags at this distance from coast during censuses by boat but in smaller numbers than closer to the beach.
Among the Shags which we tagged, Ante is really special as it is marked with Croatian colour ring. It was probably ringed as a nestling but we still investigate about its origin at the Ornithological Institute in Zagreb.
We continue with the telemetry action and hope that we can soon publish another news about further success.
