New manual on conservation of the Mediterranean Shag and other marine birds in Slovenia’s sea

6. July 2016

We are pleased to announce a new manual on conservation of the Mediterranean Shag and other marine birds in Slovenia’s sea, recently published within the scope of the project SIMARINE-NATURA.

The manual (available in Slovenian language only) is targeted at users and managers of marine space in Slovenia and has two parts. The first part (author dr. Urška Koce) is dedicated to presentation of marine Natura 2000 sites for birds (SPAs) in Slovenia’s sea, protected bird species, potential threats for the Mediterranean Shags in these areas as well as management guidelines and conservation measures to be implemented. This content is supplemented with a general chapter about Natura 2000 and a chapter about legislation relevant to the designation and management of the sites.

In the second part of the manual (author Bojana Lipej) a Plan of action in case of occurence of oiled birds and other animals due to spillage of oil and oil derivatives into the sea is presented. The action plan was elaborated within the scope of this project by a group of experts from the areas of civil protection, ornithology, veterinary service, maritime affairs, and environmental protection. Effects of oil spills on marine birds and other marine fauna, general principals of rescuing oiled birds, activation of the action plan, and the role of volunteers in rescue actions are presented in the manual.

The manual is printed in 750 copies and is also available in pdf.
