In june we started monitoring seabirds at sea according to the standard ESAS methodology (European Seabirds at Sea). The monitoring, aiming at identifying the most important foraging areas of the Mediterranean Shags and other seabirds in Slovenian sea, is being done along 43 nautical miles (80 km) long transect. The census is done by boat which is traveling 10 knots. A team of three are present on the boat: two observers and the data recorder. Detailed methodology is described in the Protocol for monitoring Mediterranean Shag in Slovenian sea (in Slovenian language – English summary available on request). We will run the monitoring for one year, once a month, except in the period of peak numbers of the Shags in Slovenian sea (August to October), when two censuses will be carried out each month.
