Problems

  • Unfavourable conservation status of the area
  • Lack of knowledge regarding the population ecology of the Mediterranean Shag in the Slovenian sea
  • Uncoordinated spatial management by various stakeholders
  • Insufficient public awareness and lack of knowledge
  • Potential hazards of oil spills

Objectives

  • To gather data on population dynamics, distribution and ecological requirements of the Mediterranean Shag in the Slovenian sea
  • To identify and designate marine IBAs (Important Bird Areas) and SPAs (Specially Protected Areas) for the Mediterranean Shag in Slovenia
  • To adopt guidelines for the new marine SPAs management in compliance with sustainable development principles
  • To prepare a plan of emergency operations in the event of oil spill into the marine environment
  • To educate the young and acquaint the public with conservation issues of the Mediterranean Shag and significance of the Slovenian sea for its protection
  • To consolidate communication among local stakeholders
